25.05.2026 | 15:12

As a result of the Benchmarking of European Medicines Agencies (BEMA), 44 medicines agencies across the European Union were ranked according to the number of strengths and best practices identified during the evaluation. Estonia achieved an outstanding 5th place, following France, Germany, Croatia and Sweden.

The objective of the Benchmarking of European Medicines Agencies is to strengthen the credibility and ensure the consistently high performance of institutions within the European Union medicines regulatory network. The assessment identifies each agency’s strengths as well as areas for further development, while also facilitating the sharing of best practices across the network.

The evaluation framework covers 40 different criteria, including organisational governance, cooperation with the healthcare sector and stakeholders, as well as specialised areas such as clinical trials, marketing authorisation applications, scientific advice, pharmacovigilance and inspections.
