The aim of the project is to assess whether use of electronic package information leaflets has any impact on the safe use of medicines and whether their use could improve availability of medicines used in healthcare institutions.
As the initial two-year period was too short to draw solid conclusions, the project has been extended—with the approval of the European Commission—until the end of 2026.
Since 1 January 2024, marketing authorisation holders can apply to the Estonian Medicines Agency for permission to omit the printed package leaflet from medicines that are administered by healthcare professionals and supplied through community pharmacies, in addition to hospital medicines.
Medicine packaging may be in one or several languages, but the labelling must always include text in Estonian.
More information about the transition to electronic product information (ePI) can be found on the European Medicines Agency website.
